Amma canteens not doing well under scanner
CHENNAI: With low-cost Amma canteens, catering to the urban poor of the metropolis, losing clientele over the years, Chennai Corporation has decided to conduct a month-long assessment program at faring poorly canteens in a bid to plug the lacunae.
According to a Chennai Corporation official, among 407 Amma canteens in the city, 39 canteens have witnessed a decline of patronage and drastic sales dip.
“All the 39 canteens are located in core city area. Extended parts of the city continue to maintain their clientele,” the official said.
“Thirty-nine canteens that have found place in the list had lost 10 per cent or more 'eaters',” the official added.
Officials also pointed out that malpractices, variation in taste, monologue menu card and other reasons are the possible factors that would have led to loss of clientele.
The civic body had decided to appoint 39 dedicated officials to conduct a month-long assessment program at the canteens. “The officials have been allotted with canteens to conduct assessments. The official orders will be issued to them. The officials will be present at the canteens for a period and conduct interviews and gather feedback from customers,” he said.
The civic body will assess the reports of the officials and summarize proposals.
“We will send the proposals to the government and the further actions will be taken on the basis of state government direction,” the official added.
The number of Amma canteens increased from 200 in 2013 to 407 in 2018. The canteens selling idly at one rupee and variety rice at Rs 5 was inaugurated by former chief minister Jayalalitha and the number of outlets witnessed a gradual increase.
However, the Chennai corporation has no plan to increase the existing number of canteens, according to the official.
He also hinted that the civic body would not add items to the menu of the canteens. However, the government will make the final call.
