MKU VC wants to improve teaching environment
Madurai: Bring in a policy of one man-one post’ and conducting annual convocation of the university within 30 days are just two of the items in the agenda of the recently appointed Madurai Kamaraj University Vice Chancellor P.P. Chelladurai, who on Wednesday vowed to bring back the last glory of the institution.
The new policy is aimed at democratic the functioning of the university administration and to improve the teaching and research environment for the students community, said Chelladurai to reporters at the university campus on Wednesday.
For instance at present a professor holds various posts like heading two schools and various projects and a administrative position in the university is not only causing backlog of work, but it also deprives students from availing the opportunity of learning from the professors, the VC pointed out.
Stating that the main role of the university is to promote teaching, research and outreach programme for the students, Chelladurai said the new policy was aimed at reducing the burden of the professors and thereby make them spend more time in the classroom.
“The government has sent me with a hope to regain the lost glory of the institution. I will definitely take steps to make the university as one among the top 200 international education institutions,” said Chelladurai.
Recalling the past record of MKU, the VC said the university which was in the nine position among the 785 education institutions in the country under the scheme University with Potential for Excellence has pushed down to 77 ranks now. “We will work as a team to improve the functioning of the university,”
When asked about the selection of faculty members for the administrative posts under new policy, the VC said that only talented senior level faculty members in the rank of professor and associate professor would be give administrative charges only on temporary basis. “Soon we will give notification to make permanent appointments for these posts following government regulations.”
The VC also decided to introduce a new outreach programme for the students as part of their curriculum to give exposure to difference culture. “We will ensure students from rural background will spend 15 days in a house in urban centres and vice versa.”
He said he has already issued instructions to admit students for MBA programme for the upcoming 2016-17 academic year at MKU College which was stopped recently on the alleged reason that the course was offered without getting the approval of All India Council for Technical Education.
The VC assured stringent action against people involved in irregularities in the university administration provided it was proven with evidence.
