BBAG bombs bridge to Hebbal, wants city cleaned up

Interested NGOs and RWAs would be roped in to help with garbage management by forming societies.

Bengaluru: Members of the Bengaluru Blueprint Action Group (BBAG) came out strongly against the proposed Rs 1,350 crore steel bridge extending from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal at a meeting with City Development Minister, K. J. George on Thursday. BBAG member, V. Ravichander, urged Mr. George to reconsider the construction of the 6.7 km steel bridge, arguing it would not solve the problem of congestion, and was both space-consuming and ugly.

Another member, R. K. Misra, suggested that the North-South elevated corridor connecting Hebbal and KR Puram be realigned to touch Minsk Square, the Indian Express circle, Cantonment, Jayamahal and Mekhri Circle. "Access ramps can be provided at Cubbon Park, Ambedkar Veedi and Infantry Road to ensure smooth movement of vehicles to Hebbal," he explained.

However, the much awaited Metro connectivity to the International Airport received all round support with both government officers and urban experts suggesting that the Gottigere-Nagavara Metro line should be linked to the airport.

As for waste management, Mr. George, in a tacit acknowledgement that the city's waste collection and disposal was now posing a health hazard, promised to hire more pourakarmikas and increase the capacity of the existing waste processing plants. Interested NGOs and RWAs would be roped in to help with garbage management by forming societies, he added.
