Congress maintains stance on UCC

NEW DELHI: The Congress maintained its stance on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with chief spokesperson Jairam Ramesh reiterating the party's earlier position. Referring to a previous press release by the party, Ramesh expressed surprise at the Law Commission seeking a fresh reference on the UCC. He highlighted that the 21st Law Commission had already published a consultation paper on the subject in August 2018. Ramesh questioned the need for revisiting the subject, stating that the real reason behind it was the Modi government's desperation to divert attention from its failures and pursue a divisive agenda.

The issue of the UCC was discussed during a meeting of the Congress parliament strategy group held at the residence of CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The group deliberated on the topics to be raised and addressed in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Insiders revealed that the group believed a draft of the UCC should be presented before the party could offer comments on it.

Additionally, the party emphasised the importance of discussing the Manipur issue in Parliament. Jairam Ramesh expressed the Congress’ desire for the House to function smoothly and for active participation in the proceedings. He highlighted other issues such as the recent rail accidents, the partisan role of governors, price rise, unemployment, the expulsion of Rahul Gandhi, and the JPC on the Hindenburg issue. The Congress also aimed to foster unity among Opposition parties to present a strong opposition front in Parliament. The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 20.
