Hyderabad: Doctor ends life, father alleges dowry harassment
Hyderabad: A doctor committed suicide by consuming an excessive number of pills to lower her heart rate when her husband was sleeping at home early on Wednesday. Dr Jaya Sree, an anaesthesiologist, consumed about 20 to 25 pills prescribed for heart patients, the Alwal police said. Her husband Dr G. Karthik is a general physician.
They met in China when they were doing MBBS and fell in love. They belonged to different communities but their parents agreed to their marriage. The couple married on November 29, 2015, they got married. She was an anaesthesia specialist and her husband was a general physician. Police said that after her marriage, Dr Jaya Sree faced dowry harassment. Dr Karthik even asked his father-in-law, Dr Kambampati Guruvaiah, to bear the honeymoon expenses, despite taking Rs 25 lakh cash, 45 tolas gold, 2 kg silver and other valuables during marriage, said Alwal police quoting Dr Guruvaiah.
Recently, the harassment by his parents increased and Dr Jaya Sree and Dr Karthik began living separately in a rented house at Alwal.
Alwal inspector M. Mattaiah said “Dr Jaya Sree was depressed due to the harassment. She consumed about 20 to 25 pills prescribed for her father Dr Guruvaiah, a heart patient. She purchased the pills about a month ago, and consumed them at about 2 am (Wednesday).”
Dr Jaya Sree was shifted to Lifeline Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Dr Karthik’s parents informed Dr Guruvaiah that Dr Jaya Sree’s health condition was serious and that he had to rush to the city. “When I called Karthik, he told me that my daughter is dead. None of them told me the reason for her death,” said Dr Guruvaiah in his complaint.
Inspector Mattaiah said a case was registered against Dr Karthik and his parents under Section 304 B and relevant Sections of SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities).
