New Year celebrations saw 3,148 drunk and driving cases in Telangana
Hyderabad: The New Year celebrations netted the police about 3,148 drunk and driving (DD) cases throughout the state. Most of the revellers who were caught with more than the permitted amount of liquor in the breathalyser test on Tuesday night were aged between 18 and 25 years. Most of the cases were booked in the limits of the Hyderabad commissionerate. Station-wise data revealed that most of the cases occurred in Madhapur which comes under the Cyberabad commissionerate.
Only one woman was caught during the drunk-driving checks, and nine minors across the state. Persons caught with alcohol higher than the permissible limit have been booked. The Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) must be below 35. Around 1,814 persons had BAC of between 30-100, and 1,059 persons had between 102 and 200 BAC.
Hyderabad commissionerate booked 951 drunk driving cases across the city, followed by the other two commissionerates in the city, Cyberabad (873) and Rachakonda (281). The Hyderabad traffic police booked as many cases in a single night as they usually do during a month long drive.
“There was over 800 police personnel dividend into 100 teams. Roadblocks were set up in 100 locations to check traffic violations and drunk driving throughout the city. Special drives were conducted at Begumpet, S.R. Nagar, Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Abids and Narayanaguda, among other areas,” said a police official.
Around 9,510 vehicles were checked by the Hyderabad city police alone. The hefty penalties and previous counselling sessions given to violators seems to have had little effect as people continue to drink and drive putting not only themselves at risk but also other members of the public.
