Chennai: Monday incident of failed skimming attempt at a Canara Bank ATM at a fuel station, has put Guindy in the card cloning gang’s map for the second time.
The BPCL-Guindy retail outlet hosting the ATM would have shared the table with BPCL retail outlet run by MCLOA (Madras City Lorry Owners Association), where a card cloning gang managed to swindle several lakhs from their rich customers that filled fuel at their station, in 2014. Only a distance of 400 metres separates both fuel stations.
In the Romanian’s case, they had installed a pinhole camera over the keypad so as to record the ATM pins keyed in by customers, and it will be saved in a memory chip to which the pinhole camera is connected.
In the meantime, the skimmer would record the details of the card, which passes through the device. “This is a classic case of skimming. And this is the first time, we have a Romanian national involved and that too in the heart of the city”, said a senior police officer.
Cops suspect the Romanian gang would have got prior information on loading of cash on Monday, and their target could have been the master card data used by the cash-loading services.
