Child rights panel seeks report on student torture

ALAPPUZHA: Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) has sought clarification from the principal of Leo XIII Higher Secondary School, and the deputy director of education (DDE) on a police couple's leaving school midway alleging torture. The Kerala Human Rights Commissioner (KSHRC) had forwarded a Deccan Chronicle report to the KeSCPCR on this. "We have asked them to file a final report in two weeks," a KeSCPCR official said.

On December 5, the Class IX student, who is also a basketball player, left the school and joined Lajanathul Muhammadiya Higher Secondary School in the town alleging repeated torture by teachers. "While an English teacher thrashed him with a cane on his back in November, the headmaster hurt his chest in September," his father Priyalal, an additional sub-inspector with the AR Camp here said. "I noticed the torture mark in November." The office of DDE confirmed of having received the notice.

"Our team has visited the school and the process is underway. We'll send the report soon," an official said. The school faces a series of allegations of torture by several students. On November 6, a group of eight students from class IX had registered a complaint with Child Welfare Committee (CWC) accusing headmaster Xavier Kutty of putting a stick inside the trouser and squeezing the belly. Albert Antony, a Class X student, committed suicide on July 21, a few days after his suspension for picking a fight with others. His suicide note had said: "I no longer want to live with people who don't understand me".
