Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao speeds up Charminar plan

Over Rs 35 crore was allocated for the project recently.

Hyderabad: In an attempt to curb air pollution at Charminar, the government will introduce battery-operated autorickshaws to take tourists around the monument. All electric cables obstructing the view of the Charminar will be taken underground.

After touring the place on Friday, minister K.T. Rama Rao said the GHMC building will be moved out of Sardar Mahal to Chandrayangutta so that the heritage building can be turned into a food court and a shopping complex.

Mr Rama Rao along with local leaders and GHMC officers inspected the long-pending Charminar Pedestrianisation Project and instructed officials that the decisions be implemented in six months. Over Rs 35 crore was allocated for the project recently.

Five parking complexes will be constructed at the Pension Payment Office. Charminar bus stand SYJ complex, Dewan Devdi and the out-patient maternity block of Nayapul hospital.

The GHMC is facing issues of land acquisition to complete the project, “Of 389 properties that will be affected along the outer road, 372 have been acquired. The 17 others are in court. Along the inner ring road, there are 254 properties of which 242 have been acquired and 12 are in court,” said GHMC chief city planner Devender Reddy.
