Cybercrime police find 11K SIM cards issued on single Aadhaar in UP

Hyderabad: The cybercrime police, investigating a KYC fraud, found that 11,000 SIM cards were issued on a single Aadhaar identity proof within a month in Uttar
Pradesh's Meerut district.

The police said this is against the department of telecommunication’s
guidelines, capping the maximum number of SIM cards at nine for each Aadhaar
card.

The police ascertained the same while investigating a complaint placed by a
city resident, who said that lakhs of rupees were siphoned off from his bank
account under the pretext of updating his KYC details.

The Centre of Excellence for Cyber Safety (CoECS) of the Telangana Police,
functioning from Cyberabad commissionerate at Gachibowli, stumbled upon the
fraudsters’ phone number and the Aadhaar number linked to it while probing
the case.

On further verification, they found 11,000 mobile connections were issued on
the same ID proof and that two of those 11,000 numbers were used in
cybercrimes in Cyberabad.

CoECS officials said that they have alerted the DoT and asked them to take
action in the case.
