Uproar in Puducherry Assembly over PG medical admission row
Puducherry: Uproarious scenes were witnessed in the Puducherry Assembly on Thursday with the Opposition protesting alleged irregularities in the admission of students in PG courses in the private medical colleges under government quota.
The opposition AIADMK and All India NR Congress (AINRC) blamed the government for not preparing the proper list of candidates for the medical courses. The House plunged into turmoil as Speaker V. Vaithilingam ordered to switch off the microphones of the Opposition. Later Opposition parties staged a walkout.
Earlier AIADMK (Amma) legislator party leader A. Anbazhagan criticised the government for conducting counselling before fixing the fee structure. He alleged that the government tried to divert the unfilled seats to management quota.
At the same time leader of the Opposition and AINRC chief N. Rangasamy demanded a detailed probe into the alleged irregularities in the selection process. A heated exchange of words between opposition and ruling bench members followed.
While replying to the allegations, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy claimed that the government had already sent a showcause notice to colleges for declining to admit the students under the government quota on the basis of the fee fixed by the fees committee and said that further severe action would follow if they continue to reject the students.
The Chief Minister asked the Opposition to submit the proof if irregularities have occurred in the admission process and said that he will submit a detailed report on the admission process and the number of students selected under government quota, in the House on Friday.
LG to conduct a meeting with medical aspirants
Lt Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi will conduct a meeting with the candidates admitted to PG medical courses through Centac, on Saturday, to have a feedback from them on the admission process.
The meeting will be conducted following the reports that the students are being declined admission by the private medical colleges even after the intervention of Lt Governor and the Government of Puducherry, an official press release from the office of Lt Governor said.
Kiran Bedi, after receiving a number of complaints about the admission process, had ordered to conduct a final counselling on Wednesday and visited the private medical colleges.
Even after that, the management of the colleges refused to admit students saying that the fee structure fixed by the committee is not acceptable to them leaving the students in chaos.
