Transport stir in Bengaluru: Time to take a relook at Sindhia report
Bengaluru: With bus strikes causing huge inconvenience to commuters and costing the public transport corporations heavily in terms of revenue, some believe it may be time to have a re-look at the Sindhia Committee report submitted to the state legislature way back in 1994.
Describing the report of the Joint House Committee headed by former transport minister, P.G.R. Sindhia as the Magna Carta of the public transport system, Mr H.V. Ananth Subbarao, general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, Karnataka, says it is relevant even today and if implemented could be hugely helpful.
“It is neither management nor labour centric, but very balanced. I would suggest that all states implement its recommendations,” Mr. Subbarao said.
The committee visited Mumbai and Delhi to study their public transport system, examined the Kolkatta Metro system and visited the Telco plant and the Central Institute of Road Transport in Pune to study the technical issues involved before giving its report.
Some of the recommendations such as dividing the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation into several regional corporations and creating a separate corporation for Bengaluru alone were implemented when Mr Sindhia was transport minister in the Janata Dal government.
Asked about its relevance today, present transport minister R. Ramalinga Reddy felt the report could be outdated, but agreed to look into it.
