CM Siddaramaiah expresses concern over poor health, education indices in Udupi
Udupi: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed displeasure over the Udupi district's underperformance in the education and health index. During a review meeting convened in Udupi on Tuesday, he warned the education and health department heads that they would be placed under suspension if there is no improvement.
Addressing a press conference, Siddaramaiah briefed about the details of Udupi district's achievements in the education and health sectors during the Congress rule and compared the poor performance during the BJP rule in the state.
Siddaramaiah pointed out that during his previous tenure, Udupi was on the top spot in education in 2014, 2017, and 2018, and secured the second position in 2015 and 2016. However, the district's performance has significantly dropped, ranking 7th in 2020, 16th in 2022, and 13th place this year.
Similarly, the health index also witnessed a worrisome decline, slipping from the first position in 2015 to 19th place now.
"This is the difference between BJP and Congress government,” Siddaramaiah said.
“Udupi and Dakshina Kannada always topped in literacy rate in the state. Udupi district is considered a progressive district. I have instructed the DHO and DDPI to take immediate measures to improve the situation. If not, they would be placed under suspension,” he said.
The Chief Minister also voiced concerns over the rising number of cyber crimes, and accidents in the Udupi district. He urged the police to take necessary actions to reduce the number of such incidents. Additionally, he instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) officials to prioritize road maintenance to minimize accidents.
Addressing the damages caused by recent rainfall, the chief minister said that while the district experienced a deficit of 53 percent rainfall in June, July saw an excess of 25 percent. He directed the Deputy Commissioners and agriculture officials to support farmers affected by the rain damage by providing seeds and fertilizers to those seeking to re-sowing or opt for alternative crops.
The Chief Minister also addressed the issue of temporary footbridges, which have led to tragic fatalities while crossing. He directed the Rural Development and PWD authorities to prepare an estimate for the construction of proper footbridges in the district.
During his visit to the district, Siddaramaiah also visited D Devaraj Urs Pre-Metric Girls Hostel and interacted with the students.
