Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has never been bested in legal battles throughout his political career. He has a record of 17 cases being struck down by various courts in and out of the state.
The first case was dismissed by the Supreme Court where it was alleged that the then Governor didn’t allow prosecution of Mr Naidu in a disproportionate assets case. Pleas for CBI probes from 1999 to 2005 were dismissed and there was also the recent petition filed by late Chief Minister Y.S Rajasekhar Reddy’s wife Y.S. Vijayalakshmi.

The case filed by the widow of Telugu Desam founder-president Lakshmi Paravati in 2005 seeking a ACB probe into Mr Naidu’s assets was stayed by the High Court. The Supreme Court in 2010 dismissed a liquor purchase case filed by one Krishna Kumar Goud.

A writ petition seeking Mr Naidu’s role in the Emmaar deal was also dismissed in 2011. The IMG Bharathi case filed by Congress leader P. Govardhan Reddy, seeking a probe under the PC Act into allotment of lands to IMG Bharathi, was dismissed by the High Court which stating that “no public interest is involved if land is given to develop sports and infrastructure for 2020 Olympics”.

TD leader M. Linga Reddy said, “Around 24 House committee probes, 17 illegal cases filed by YSR, his wife Vijayamma, and the present Leader of the Opposition in the AP Assembly Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and others and 40 other petitions filed were all gone. Thus the fresh case was filed by YSRC MLA A. Ramakrishna Reddy. YSR had himself withdrawn four cases due to lack of evidence against Naidu. Despite courts repeatedly striking them down, they are filing cases again and again. They are not even leaving the NTR Trust and have filed cases.”

Mr Naidu, while interacting with his party MPs and MLAs, said on Thursday: “There is no meaning in approaching the ACB court after the High Court has clearly ruled that there is no basis for the case. There is nothing in the case and YSRC is unnecessarily making it a big issue. YSRC is trying to pull me back as I am working hard for the state.”
YSRC MLA A. Ramakrishna Reddy said, “The ACB court has taken up my complaint stating that it shall be investigated. I have appealed to Naidu that if he has any respect for the law or courts he should not go for a quash petition. Why should he fear investigation into the case? Being afraid that his guilt will be proved, Naidu wanted to stop the probe and hence has gone for a stay petition.”

Andhra Pradesh BJP state president K. Haribabu, reacting to the cash-for-vote scam, said, “Those facing allegations are doing what they are supposed to do and the law is also taking its own course.”
