KOCHI: Skywalk to connect metro to South railway station
KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) will set up a skywalk at South metro station to the premise of the Ernakulam Junction railway station to facilitate commuters with heavy luggage.
The metro station is nearly 300 metres away from the railway station. “A facility similar to the skywalk at Edapally Lulu Mall is being proposed,” said a senior railway official. “We’ve given necessary permission to the KMRL to set up a link bridge from the first storey of the metro station till the railway station entrance gate. An escalator or stairway will be built there. This was promised in a recent meet to discuss the issue.”
The railways will later construct a connectivity facility from first storey of the revamped railway station building to the ‘skywalk’ when the Rs 470 crore station redevelopment project will be taken up, the official said.
The Kochi Metro will start commercial services in the Maharajas College-Thykoodam section from September 4. A lot of long haul commuters are expected to use both the transport modes which help provide them with fast last mile connectivity.
