Greater Hyderabad joint transport commissioner J. Pandurang Naik said the department officers would telling automobile showroom representatives to stop the practice. “Everything has gone online. Motorists can book a time slot on our website. A motorist needs to spend only 10 to 20 minutes at RTA offices. There is no need to approach middlemen," he said.

High Court advocate Sagarika Loya was told by a car showroom representative to approach a middleman at Khairatabad RTA. Instead, she booked a slot on the RTA website and got her vehicle registered in 10 minutes.

Finding that it was easy, she wrote to the joint transport commissioner to prevent customers from getting cheated. She said notice boards should be set up at all showrooms, telling customers not to approach middlemen. Mr Naik said middlemen were not allowed inside the registration offices. Only those with valid documents are allowe inside by the guards, he said.

RTA officials explain life tax to showroom staff
Road Transport Authority officials hold awareness sessions for showroom staff on the amount of life tax to be levied on vehicles. An RTA official said most showrooms collect life tax for the vehicle after reducing special discounts and exchange benefit.

“As per the Motor Vehicle Act, tax should be on the ex-showroom price,” the official said. He said that when the document comes for registation, the RTA finds a discrepancy in the life tax and asks the vehicle owner to pay the difference. “At least 10 per cent of motorists suffer due to this,” he said.
