Citizen-friendly policing paid rich dividends: IGP Kumar

The friendly attitude of cops helped in maintaining law and order, especially during communal clashes in Kodagu and Hunsur.

Mysuru: Southern Range IGP Vipul Kumar has said that citizen friendly policing with revised beat system and other measures such as use of social media helped the police interact better with people and reduce crime in all the five districts within the range in 2017.

After addressing the Southern range police duty meet here on Tuesday morning, he told reporters, “Police are source of help. Respectful interaction with public, honouring their dignity including reception desks and help desks for adults, children and women at each station and other measures, helped availing information from general public,” he said.

The IGP pointed out that this helped the police maintain law and order, especially during crucial situations such as handling communal clashes in Kodagu during Tipu Jayanthi, Hanuma Jayanthi in Hunsur and other such incidents in Chamarajnagar, Hassan.

It also helped us while dealing with violence related to Cauvery issue Mandya and while providing security during Gundlupet and Nanjangud by elections.

Enhanced CCTV surveillance with 168 CC cameras in Mysuru district, 26 in Mandya, 69 in Hassan, 82 in Kodagu, 18 in Chamarajnagar too helped in curbing crime rate, he said. He told reporters that compared with 2016, crime against women and children have come down by 18 percent, murders by 16.81 percent and robbery, dacoity by 9.34 percent.

This year the Southern range recorded 83 rape cases, 14 kidnap and abduction, 59 murders, 24 dowry deaths, 999 molestation cases, 249 cases of domestic violence and 2,985 cases of crime against children. In 2016, there were 64 rapes, 17 kidnap and abduction cases, 79 murders, 30 dowry deaths, 986 molestation cases, 302 cases of domestic violence, 3,092 cases of crime against children.

The IGP pointed out that there were three deaths of constables in the range. He said measures were being taken to help policemen air their grievances and provide counseling.

“Officers are being advised to have WhatsApp groups at every station level. And there are plans to have e-offices to make them paper free at IGP's office, Mysuru SP office and Mysuru city Police Commissioner’s office,”
he said.
