36.8mm rain lashes Hyderabad, highest in Jan since 1922
Hyderabad: The unseasonal weather looming over the city continued on Thursday with the skies opening up and the metropolis drenched by a sudden heavy downpour, even as December, a month meant to leave people shivering with its cold, disappointed too. Late on Thursday afternoon, the city witnessed a spell of rain measuring close to 14 mm, which is the highest rainfall it has received in over a decade in January.
“There is a confluence zone that has formed over the city. There is a circulation coming in from eastern and western bays, which are forming rain-bearing clouds over the city. This effect is prevalent in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh and a few other areas. However, we predict that there will be subdued rains in Telangana henceforth,” M Mohapatra, director-general, Indian Meteorological Department, told Deccan Chronicle.
Speaking of winter, meteorologists from private weather forecasting outfits like Skymet, say that the city will have a more-than delayed winter. “It is highly unlikely that there would be a drop in temperature till January 10, after which, the city would witness a fall in temperatures,” said Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet.
Explaining the cause for delay in arrival of winter, Mr Palawat said, “There has been a lot of wind flow from the seas, laden with humidity, which forms a barrier in the atmosphere. This barrier stops the heat from the earth’s surface from being radiated to the open sky, making the earth’s surface warmer.”
Following the rains, people of the city took to social media to express their feelings about the sudden rain. One Mr Sridhar wrote, ‘Clouds are live and looks like about to burst. It’s started raining by the time i click tweet’ (sic).
Taking things in a lighter vein, Mr Arvind Ramchander, said, ‘Jan 1st – Hyderabad rains, JAN 2nd – Hyderabad rains. Monsoons have been shifted, Winter is unavailable, Summers will abruptly start!! Dear Hyderabad, weather, can you communicate better than our government please’ (sic).
