SC adjourns hearing of Amaravati cases to April
Vijayawada: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of the Amaravati cases until April. The court will make a decision after hearing the arguments at length.
The AP high court had previously ruled that Amaravati should be the capital. This order was challenged by the AP government in the apex court.
The bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta clarified that arguments will be heard on the non-miscellaneous day of that month.
In March 2022, the HC issued a verdict, asking the state government to continue Amaravati as the capital. As per the master plan, it has given orders imposing time limits on the work to be done.
Challenging the HC verdict, the state government approached the SC. Arguments were presented by rival sides. The bench headed by Justice KL Joseph stayed some of the deadlines imposed by the HC for Amaravati's capital city constructions. The case came up for hearing before the bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta on Wednesday.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi argued on behalf of AP and said the state government had withdrawn the three-capitals order. The HC verdict was null and void, it was argued before the SC.
However, advocate Devdat Kamat, on behalf of the farmers of the capital, rejected the claims. The apex court was told that the verdict given by the HC had merit. Justice Sanjeev Khanna heard the arguments of both sides and said further submissions could be made in April.
