Hyderabad: Prof. Soumyo Mukherji has assumed charge as director of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, Hyderabad. He took over from Prof. G. Sundar, who held the position for 36 years.
Prior to his present position, which is for five years, Prof. Mukherji was the Madhuri Sinha chair professor in biomedical engineering at IIT Bombay. He is a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, B. Tech in instrumentation engineering from IIT Kharagpur and an M.S. from Colorado State University.
Prof. Mukherji has prestigious fellowships from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE) and the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASC). He was earlier the dean (student affairs) and head of the Centre for research in nanotechnology & science. He has also served as the head of the sophisticated analytical instrument facility during 2010-13.
Meanwhile, Prof. Sundar will continue to contribute to BITS Pilani as the director for off-campus programmes and industry engagement.
