Hyderabad's famous tech district running out of water

This shortage has affected water supply to IT companies and colonies in Gachibowli, Ma-dhapur, Kondapur and Kothaguda suburbs.

Hyderabad: The nerve centre of Brand Hyderabad — Madhapur and its surrounding areas — is facing an acute water shortage due to the diversion of the Singur water for local use in Medak.

The water supply to the Lingampally campus reservoir, which caters to the IT corridor, has been cut by one million gallons of water per day, said water works section manager (Madhapur) Prabhakar.

“Usually, Madhapur section was getting 7 MGD of water. But in the last 20 days, the supply has been reduced to 6 MGD,” he said. This shortage has affected water supply to IT companies and colonies in Gachibowli, Ma-dhapur, Kondapur and Kothaguda suburbs.

The water board has been supplying water in these areas only once in three days as against earlier practice of once in two days. Residents claim the duration of water supply has also been shortened.

T. Rajam Raju, an employee of Kondapur police battalion, equated the present situation with the shortages experienced in the city during the summer. According to water works department general manager of P. Ven-kateswar Rao, the supply of Krishna water from Prashasannagar to Madhapur should have been routed thr-ough the Lingampally campus reservoir. But due to the lack of connectivity facilities, this was not done resulting in water shortage in the IT corridor.

“The arrival of Krishna water phase-III from Raidurgam is the only solution to the crisis. We are expecting the 1,000 mm pipeline works will come into existence by the end of March,” he said.

The Raidurgam pipel-ine had to be completed by end of December 2016. But it got delayed because of the construction of an underpass at Mindspace junction under SRDP works. Besides this, almost all the borewells in the IT corridor have dried up, worrying people about the availability of water in the summer.

14 reservoirs miss timeline
The proposed 14 new water reservoirs in the IT corridor may get further delayed due to the lack of coordination between water works, GHMC and R&B. As per schedule, four reservoirs sho-uld have been functional by Sankranti and the remaining by the end of March. But due to the delay in lying of pipelines, the four reservoirs will function by March ending.

The Water works department has taken up the works of constructions of 14 reservoirs in IT corridor with an estimation of Rs 290 crore targetting as many as one lakh new connections.

The four reservoirs will have storage capacity of 17.5 million litres of water which ensure uninterrupted supply for at least seven days to respective localities in cases of any damage to main pipeline of Godavari waters.

While officials are confident of completing works on Hafeezpet and Miyapur reservoirs in coming mo-nth, they are not sure about the timeline of Gopanpally and Nallagandla works. The four reservoirs will enable at least 8,000 more new connections apart from the existing taps.
