Turmeric price cheers Nizamabad farmers
Nizamabad: Turmeric price has been increasing gradually in Nizamabad agriculture market yard in the last few days. Being the beginning of the season, the increasing price is kindling the hopes of farmers of a good profit.
Interestingly, there is demand for Nizamabad variety turmeric in foreign countries like United Arab Emirates (UAE), Taiwan, UK, US. Turmeric is being cultivated in large exapnses in Armoor area in Nizamabad district.
The farmers of Armoor, Jakranpally, Velpur, Kammarpally, Morthad, Balkonda, Nandipet mandals are habituated to cultivate turmeric since decades. Two varieties of turmeric -- kadi (finger) and gola (bulb) is produced in the district, which is high in demand in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi.
After drying and polishing of the Nizamabad variety of turmeric, the traders would export the turmeric powder to foreign countries. The international demand is helping in the rise of turmeric prices in Nizamabad market yard.
It is hoped that the trend may continue till the turmeric season reaches its peak in April. In January alone, around 35,000 quintals of turmeric arrivals were recorded in Nizamabad market yard.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Bangaru Muthenna, a farmer of Mendora village in Balkonda Assembly constituency, said that he sold turmeric for '7,500 per quintal on Thursday. “We are expecting more rise in the price,” he said and added that keeping the remunerative prices in mind, turmeric farmers produced both varieties.
The increasing price of turmeric is attracting a large number of farmers to the Nizamabad market yard, instead of Sangli market in Maharashtra, where they used to sell their produce earlier. Nizamabad in Telangana, Sangli in Maharashtra and Erode in Tamil Nadu are famous market yards for turmeric trading in the country.
Introduction of Natoinal Agriculture Market (NAM) scheme which facilitates online trading has boosted the confidence of farmers on fair price for turmeric. When contacted, Nizamabad agriculture market committee grade-II secretary M.B. Narender said the highest price offered for turmeric in Nizamabad so far was Rs 8,000 a quintal turmeric. Due to the closure of Erode market, a few TN farmers reached Nizamabad t sell their produce, he added.
