Shillong continues to be under curfew after riots, internet services remain suspended
Guwahati: Curfew continued in parts of Shillong for the second day on Saturday as the Army conducted flag marches in its disturbed areas and rescued around 500 people following night-long violence and arson, officials said.
The state administration has clamped curfew after violence during the night in which a mob torched a shop, a house and damaged at least five vehicles besides injuring a senior cop. Superintendent of police Stephan Ryn-jah sustained injuries after he was hit by a rod and has been admitted to the Shillong Civil Hospital, a senior police officer said on Saturday.
At least 10 people, including policemen, were injured in the violence that has triggered demands that the government must take action against alleged illegal settlers. State police was attacked by stone pelters in the restive Motphran area.
The local MLA of Nongkrem, Lambor Malniang said the matter of rehabilitating sweepers was discussed a long time back and the sweepers were given a place at Nongmynsong.
