SHRC begins probe into Thoothukudi police firing
THOOTHUKUDI: Tamil Nadu ‘State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) started enquiry on Saturday on the recent Thoothukudi violence and the police action that followed, killing 13 and injuring more than 140.
The team comprising of two members of the SHRC, D Jayachandran and Dr A Chittaranjan Mohandoss and the SP, SHRC, Ms. Sathiya Priya, arrived at Thoothukudi on Saturday morning held a brief discussion with the district collector, Sandeep Nanduri. Later the team commenced its enquiry by inspecting the damages caused by the rioters at the district collector’s office premises and at the Sterlite employees’ quarters.
The SHRC members too visited Thoothukudi medical college hospital and personally held enquiries with all the 56 injured people undergoing treatment there about the incident. The SHRC team, however, did not permit media persons inside the hospital, when they held the enquiry with the injured persons. The team too met the family members of the persons killed in the riot and received complaint petitions from the public and affected families.
Later, in the evening, speaking to media persons the team head, D Jayachandran said that they have collected all details and would submit their report to the chairman of the State Human Rights commission in a couple of days.
The five-member team led by senior SP and head of the investigation division, National Human Rights Commission, Pupul Dutta Prasad too arrived at Thoothukudi on the same day evening. The NHRC team however is SET to commence their enquiry on Sunday morning,” said the Thoothukudi district collector, Sandeep Nanduri. An independent enquiry on the issue by Coordinating Committee for people’s Inquest on Thoothukudi police firing too is to also hold its public enquiry session here on Sunday.
