India produces 15 lakh engineers every year

Learning skills is the key to get employed in the competitive world, he said. Indian engineers need post-course training.

Hyderabad: The US produces one lakh engineers in a working year for a $16-trillion economy whereas India produces 15 lakh engineers for it $2-trillion economy. The Indian economy will have no role at current GDP rates for more that 15 per cent of the engineers in the future, said Mr Sujiv Nair, chief executive officer, Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge. Learning skills is the key to get employed in the competitive world, he said. Indian engineers need post-course training.

Mr Venkata Gaddam Reddy, an education expert, said, “The key difference between the Indian economy and US is productivity. Engineers coming out of US universities are productive from day one in the workplace. Indian engineering graduates are not so. They need to be trained after college for six months to a year before they can become productive.”

Engineering students need employability skills. Prof. N.V. Ramana Rao, director, NIT-Warangal, said, “India is producing engineers to meet global needs. Unfortunately the quality of output is bad. That is where finishing schools play an important role.”

He said employability skills have to be improved for engineers in India. “That is what is expected to be imparted by the faculty to students. India’s engineering students are very aspirational. It is up to the system — parents, mentors, and institutions and the government — to inspire and lead them directionally.”
