Bengaluru: Metro work at Indiranagar spooks commuters

BMRCL terms it as routine maintenance.

Bengaluru: Metro services in Bengaluru will be hit on Saturday night and Sunday morning between Baiyappanahalli and M.G. Road stations and on the Purple Line and BMRCL claims it is to carry out regular maintenance works.

However on Friday it turns into that the problem is much more serious. There was panic among passengers after they saw workers carrying out repairs at a metro pillar near Indiranagar Metro station.

The BMRCL has, however, claimed that it was part of regular maintenance. A BMRCL official told Deccan Chronicle, “Trains won't run on this portion of the Purple Line, which covers Baiyappanahalli, Indiranagar, Swami Vivekananda Road, Halasuru, Trinity and MG Road stations. Depending on the work being carried out on Saturday.”

It is just a rumour that there is a crack or bearing problem at Indiranagar Metro Station, after seeing workers, he added.

BMRCL makes is clear that there is no such problem and the services are being suspended as the maintenance involves electrical, civil and mechanical work. Some of the work can’t be done in night. That’s why we need to work during day time. This has got nothing to do with the earlier structural damage.”

But sources within BMRCL have accused the corporation of downplaying the problem and hiding the real reason for suspension of services. They claim there was a fault with a bearing above the pillar near Indiranagar station. "BMRCL had found fault with the bearing placed above a pillar near the Indiranagar metro station and decided to suspend services to fix the problem," a BMRCL source said.

Prior to this, train services on the same Purple Line were stopped between MG Road and Indiranagar for three days from December 28, 2018 -January 1, 2019, for repairs on the structure of the Metro Bridge.

On December 9, 2018, a team of Metro officials had found a honeycomb formation in a concrete structure near the Trinity Metro Station while inspecting the Metro tracks. The officials found that the slider (ramp on which tracks are laid) was also dislocated.
