Habsiguda fire spreads panic

Hyderabad: A fire broke out at a three-storied commercial building located next to an Indian Oil fuel station at Kakatiyanagar Colony of Habsiguda early Wednesday morning, triggering panic among locals. Property worth lakhs of rupees was gutted, but there was no injury or loss of life.

Officials said that they were informed about the fire, at a garment showroom on the second floor of the Unlimited Building, at around 5.20 am.

“The building has various shops on ground and G+1 and a restaurant on the third floor. The firefighters reached on time and extinguished the fire from spreading on the other floors,” a fire department official said.

Ramakrishna Reddy, station fire officer, said: “Our priority was to stop the fire from spreading as there is a petrol pump adjacent to the mall. It took more than three hours to control the flames.”

“Six fire tenders, including two Bronto fire tenders (skylifts) from Moula Ali, Uppal and Ramanthapur were rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire. Five water tankers from Nacharam and Moula Ali refiling points were used by the firefighters to extinguish the flames,” the SFO said.

The incident led to a heavy traffic jam, following which Osmania University police took action by clearing the crowd gathered on the road, due to which traffic was blocked.

The entire glass elevation of the complex was shattered due to immense pressure from the garment showroom, officials said, adding that there was no one present at the time of the incident.

They said that property worth lakhs of rupees in three shops on the first and second floors of the building were gutted in the fire.

“We suspect that a short circuit might have initiated the fire. A case of fire accident has been registered and we are investigating,” said P. Anjaneyulu, Osmania University police station inspector.
