Heavy Rains Lash Southern Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rainfall continued to lash various parts of Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram and a yellow alert for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts.
The next 24 hours are expected to see rainfall ranging from 115 mm to 204.4 mm, accompanied by strong winds. Water has already started seeping into the upper areas of Kuttanad in Alappuzha, while some low-lying areas are waterlogged. As a precaution against potential floods, educational institutions in Kottayam taluk up to the higher secondary level remained closed on Tuesday, along with schools functioning in camps in Changanassery and Vaikom taluks.
Additionally, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued alerts due to rising water levels in various rivers in Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts. The Neyyar river in Thiruvananthapuram, particularly the Aruvippuram station, is on orange alert as the water level has surpassed the danger level. The Karamana river in Thiruvananthapuram, the Achankovil river in Pathanamthitta, and the Manimala river at Kallooppara station have also been put on yellow alert. People residing in areas along these rivers have been advised to exercise caution and vigil.
The IMD has warned that the state may experience rain and thundershowers for the next five days due to a low-pressure area lying over southwest Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh, as well as a cyclonic circulation present over central Maharashtra.
