Don't try to split us, G Sukumaran Nair to LDF

Mr Nair said the notification amid the raging row over young women's entry at Sabrimala was aimed at dividing the Hindu community.

Thiruvananthapuram: Nair Service Society general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair has warned the LDF government not to play with the NSS by trying to placate it with the notification on 10 per cent job reservation for the poor among the forward classes in devaswom appointments.

Mr Nair said the notification amid the raging row over young women’s entry at Sabrimala was aimed at dividing the Hindu community. He was referring to the strong reservations the Ezhava community has towards the 10 per cent devaswom job reservation. SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan had criticised the government decision as “contrary to the concept of reservation, originally meant as a tool for social uplift”.

Mr Nair said the government stood exposed by its move at this juncture, solely aimed at pitting one community against the other. “The Hindu community would remain united, upholding customs and traditions at Sabarimala and not be influenced by the government’s tactics of playing one against the other,” he said.

He said the NSS knew quite well who were behind attacks on Karayogam offices. “The NSS and the community have the strength and the resources to resist those who ride roughshod on the people and its hoary traditions,” the NSS leader said.

For the NSS, upholding Sabarimala traditions was far more important than the issue of 10 per cent reservations. The NSS would remain a part and parcel of the Hindu community, fight issues legally and continue to protest along with other organisations to compel the Government to withdraw from penalizing peaceful agitators.

Mukundan flays attacks: Former BJP organising secretary P.P. Mukundan came down heavily on the government for failing to protect NSS offices. The government must immediately apprehend culprits behind attacks on the two NSS offices in Thriuva-nanthapuram and prove that it was in no way part of a game-plan to harm the NSS.

The NSS had always espoused cause of believers. Such attacks on NSS offices would not detract it from its commitment to protect the believers, he said.
