Varsity PRO comes to know of HCU prof’s arrest from media
HYDERABAD: Even though the issue of attempt to rape of an international student came to the notice of the University of Hyderabad student leaders at around 10 pm on Friday, and a crowd had gathered and police was called to the campus, varsity public relations officer (PRO) Ashish Jacob Thomas claimed cluelessness about the matter till 9.45 am on Saturday.
When this correspondent reached out to get an update on the issue at 9.42 am, the PRO said, “I’m just hearing about this. There are no students (from the country of the victim’s origin) on the campus. Let me check and get back.” News of the incident had been shared on social media platforms by that time.
“Forget the PRO, even the management was not very cooperative when we approached them in the night”, said a student who was protesting at the university gate on Saturday.
“The management was negligent when we approached them. It was only after a huge crowd gathered and calls from the victim’s lecturer from her home country that they showed some response. This is a serious matter and the reputation of the institution is at stake,” they said.
