Move to redesign SPC project in Kerala
KOZHIKODE: The State Council Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is conducting a study on the current status of Student Police Cadet to revamp and reduce its dependence on the police department. The initiative originated in Kozhikode when IG P. Vijayan was city police commissioner.
A workshop as part of this was going on in Kannur for the last two days and the study with the help of teachers from various parts of the state, who will also check the prospects of the project, will begin soon.
“The state education department has been watching the project gaining popularity nationwide,” said a high ranking official with the SPC.
"The study is a significant step towards the revamp. The department wants a bigger role for academics."
He feels not just the education department, but some police officials also are trying to scrap the project describing it as a burden on the state government and for the police.
The SCERT official Sadashivan N. said, “The over influence of police in SPC should be limited, as academics are also matters. At the same time due to the shortage of staff in police, the theory classes are going weak. Hence our suggestion is to hand over the academic part to the education department, leaving the drill for police.
