Rythu Bandhu: Telangana landowners who avoid sop to face Benami Act
Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is mulling over the possibility of recommending that the Centre invoke the provisions of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act (the Benami Act), that came into force in November 2016, to attach the properties of landowners who are not coming forward to receive new pattadar passbooks or Rythu Bandhu cheques.
The new passbooks are being printed and distributed after linking with Aadhaar.
Despite repeated reminders from the revenue department, the owners of over 4.59 lakh land holdings, mostly on the outskirts of the city and falling in neighbouring districts, have not come forward to give Aadhaar details or receive passbooks or cheques.
The state government suspects that these land holdings might be held by proxies or benamis.
The government wants to give them a chance to submit details by June 20 and if they fail to do so, then recommend to the Centre that it invoke the Benami Act.
