Warangal: Three farmers working in a field were killed in lightning strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, as heavy thundershowers inundated several residential colonies and disrupted daily lives across the erstwhile Warangal district.
The victims were identified as Arepally Vanamma, 56, of Gopalpur village in Chityal mandal, Vanga Ravi, 48, of Ponagandla village in Regonda mandal, and Katam Raghupati Reddy, 25, of Chatrajpally village in Malhar mandal.
Meanwhile, Warangal city recorded the highest rainfall, of 140 mm, on Wednesday. Among the worst-hit colonies were Saiganesh Nagar, SR Nagar, Garib Nagar, NTR Nagar and Shiva Nagar.
Vehicular movement came to a halt as the Santoshi Mata Temple Road and roads leading to Brundavan Colony in the city went underwater. Besides, the Hunter Road in Hanamkonda was also severely waterlogged.
Warangal mayor Gundu Sudha Rani inspected the NTR Nagar and BR Nagar colonies, assuring residents of help. She ordered officials to move them to relief camps.
In Mahabubabad district, a rainfall of 84.6 mm was recorded in Kuravi mandal, followed by 82.6 mm rainfall in Bayyaram mandal. Due to heavy water flow, the low-lying bridge between Neredu and Raipatnam in Kuravi was submerged. Farmers in Kothaguda mandal, meanwhile, panicked after witnessing the formation of an alleged tornado near the Velubelly lake in the afternoon.
In Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, 64.2 mm of rainfall was recorded in Ghanpur mandal, followed by 61 mm of rainfall in Bhupalpally mandal.
