Thrissur: Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav, the Kargil war hero who was in the forefront of the fight back by Indian Army in retrieving the Tiger Hills, a major strategic location for the military, will be reaching Irinjalakuda here for inauguration of the ‘Dheeratha Mathil’ (the wall of courage) at St Joseph’s College on Wednesday.
Sub. Major Yadav, then a sepoy, received 12 bullets on his body fired by the Pak infiltrators, but fought back firing several rounds at the enemy, killing four among them.
He also demolished enemy bunkers by hurling grenades.
He was 19 years during the Kargil war and is the youngest Army man to get the Param Vir Chakra, the highest bravery award given for valour shown in war.
The Wall has been set up by the women NCC unit of the college to honour all the 21 Param Vir Chakra winners. Their photos and the story of their incredible courage has been fixed on Wall.
As many as 14 martyrs of India military were awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously. Only three of the awardees including Sub. Major Yadav Yadav are presently alive.
Sub. Major Yadav is at present subedar major of Junior Leadership Academy of Indian Army at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.
Col H. Padmanabhan (Retd), who was the former NCC commanding officer of NCC battalion in Thrissur, has taken the initiative for making the ‘Dheeratha Mathil’ at the college and he is also the coordinator of the event.
Sub. Major Yadav will also be meeting the wife of another Kargil hero and martyr from Thrissur, Lieutenant Colonel Ramakrishnan Vishwa-nathan of 18 Grenadiers, of which Yadav was a member in the fight for Tiger Hills.
