Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday is said to have expressed its displeasure over seizure of liquor and cash in Telangana state. It has directed the state police to send them weekly reports on law enforcement measures during elections.
Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar and 15 poll panel officials reviewed the situation with SPs, police commissioners and collectors. Sources said that the EC officials obtained feedback in connection with law enforcement and election related issues.
"The police in Gujarat, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Manipur have seized crores of rupees in cash which was transported by hawala for elections. But the situation is different in Telangana. Here the police only concentrated on seizing narcotic substances and had failed to prevent liquor flow and cash transactions," they told the officials.
During an interaction, police officials explained about how drugs are being supplied from Goa to Hyderabad. Immediately, the EC officials asked the Mahbubnagar SP why the forces in the district, in which the national highway to Goa passes, had failed to prevent such activities.
EC officials said one officer must be made accountable for cash and liquor transportation. They also enquired about the activities of the outlawed Maoists in Telangana.
