Half-yearly exams in Gaja-hit districts may be postponed: KA Sengottaiyan

Sengottaiyan asserted that the history of all national leaders and their sacrifices during the freedom struggle have been well covered.

Erode/Salem: Half-yearly exams in government schools in the cyclone 'Gaja' devastated districts of Tamil Nadu may be postponed, School Education minister, K.A. Sengottaiyan, indicated on Monday.

Though the School Education department was of the view that postponing the exams in those affected districts “involves difficulties”, the government is still considering the possibility, he said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function to distribute free bicycles to children of various higher secondary schools near Gobichettipalayam in Erode.

He said in the new syllabi for history text books, there have been some complaints that the achievements of erstwhile British rulers have found disproportionately larger space. However, Sengottaiyan asserted that the history of all national leaders and their sacrifices during the freedom struggle have been well covered and if there was any specific complaint regarding any national leader having been left out, Government will take corrective steps.

On defective bicycles having been distributed to students at a government function in Tindivanam, he said government will take action to remedy the situation.

HM SUSPENDED IN SALEM:

Meanwhile, in an incident in Salem, the headmistress of a panchayat union middle school in Rasigoundanur near there, Ms. Shanthi has been placed under suspension, for allegedly caning a second class student on Monday.

The seven-year-old boy Karunamurthy, who went to school as usual, was reportedly found littering on the playground. But Karunamurthy was summoned to the headmistress room where she allegedly caned the boy severely causing injuries on his leg and hands, sources said.

The boy's shocked parents then admitted the boy at the Salem government hospital for treating his injuries.

A complaint was lodged with the authorities and Ms. Shanthi was suspended after a preliminary enquiry by the district education authorities revealed a prima facie case of corporal punishment. Further investigations are on.
