Hyderabad: Universities asked to avoid exams on poll day

Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly elections are little more challenging for the Election Commission because of the short duration for preparatory work said, Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar on Monday. He said that the EC has asked all universities not to conduct exams from December 5 to 12 in view of elections. While preparatory works starts a year before the elections, he said, the success of the elections depends on purity of electoral rolls.

"The EC has incorporated several innovate features. We used the ERO net to weed out bogus voters. The lists were broken down and demographically similar features were extracted. If four out of five features matched, exemption reports were made. The comparisons were done manually. A total of 4.92 lakh names were removed, of which two lakh voters were dead and 1.93 lakh were multiple entries".

He added that About 10,000 service voters will cast vote using postal ballot in the Telangana elections. "Since the VVPAT systems have high failure rate, 35 per cent of them are procured in excess while EVM's are procured 20 percent in excess," he said.

Speaking about exit polls, Mr Kumar said that they would be allowed only after 5.30 pm on December7. He said betting did not come under the EC's purview, but it is against the law. Around 39 constituencies are considered as Left wing extremist sensitive constituencies and Kodangal as politically sensitive, he said.
