Loyola goes to Madras HC against state CIC

The shift I is government aided stream while shift II is a self financing stream.

Chennai: Loyola College in Chennai approached the Madras high court over an order, from state chief information commissioner K. Ramanujam, which asked the college to share certain information on its admission procedures to an RTI applicant.

The college has now dragged the chief information commissioner, joint director of college education and Rights Awareness Organisation run by the RTI applicant S. Zakir Hussain to high court through a writ of certiorari asking to call for the records related to the impugned proceedings issued by the CIC and quash the same, according to documents available with this newspaper.

It all started with RTI applicant Zakir Hussian sending an application in March last year under Right To Information Act seeking to know to number of applicants for courses in the college received for the academic year 2015-16 for the shift I and II besides the merit list for the same academic year.

The shift I is government aided stream while shift II is a self financing stream.
The RTI applicant also wanted to know how many applications were received from Catholic and non-Catholic for each stream besides is demanding the merit list and waiting list details of the same.

How many Catholics and non-Catholics were admitted in each stream in different courses, the applicant had further asked. As the college refused to reply, Zakir Hussian approached the state information commission.

While the college maintained that there is no public interest the questions asked under RTI Act, chief information commissioner K Ramanujam ordered the college to provide answers to all questions related to shift I, which is a government aided stream.

In his order dated October 8, 2016, he asked the college principal to furnish information related to shift I within 20 days. Loyola college refused to furnish the information, but the college last month approached the Madras high court saying that there is no public interest in the RTI enquiry.
