Water scarcity hits Ernakulam
KOCHI: Many parts of Ernalulam district are reeling under acute drinking water scarcity even before the onset of summer, according to reports. Water level in wells, rivers and other water sources is fast depleting. It is a drought-like situation in those flood-affected areas where water receded to unusual level with drying up of wells in the vicinity of rivers soon after the disaster.
Water level in Periyar, Muvattupuzha river and their tributaries has gone down drastically even during January, much unlike in the previous years. Wells in eastern parts of the district, where people are solely dependent on well water, have an unusual low water level.
Water level near the intake wells of Kerala Water Authority main pump houses at Aluva in Periyar and Choondi in Muvattupuzha river is low compared to previous years. Low water level in rivers has also affected the open wells along the banks.
Water scarcity is acute in many parts of Kochi city, too. Residents of Ponnurunny, Vyttila, Janatha and Poonithura blocked KWA assistant executive engineer on Monday seeking immediate measures to resolve water scarcity. Corporation councillors V.P Chandran, P.S Shine and Rajiv Chandra-sekharan led the protest.
