Hyderabad: Cops urged to stop breathalyser tests

Not to mention, put the lives of officers who handle these machines at risk as well, the letter added.

Hyderabad: A teetotaler in the city on Tuesday gave a representation to Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar to suspend the “unhygienic” breath analyser tests to detect drunken driving as there were chances that the coronavirus might spread through coughing and sneezing.

The letter to the police chief said that the use of breathalysers in the current scenario is highly unhygienic and can be one of the avenues through which the virus can spread to a lot of people. Not to mention, put the lives of officers who handle these machines at risk as well, the letter added.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, P. Suresh Raju of Vaada Foundation, who wrote the letter, said, “I don’t drink nor support drinking. I have conducted anti-drinking campaigns in coordination with the WHO in the past. But when coronavi-rus cases are on the rise, one should be careful.”
