COONOOR: The United Planters' Association of South India (UPASI) here and Tea Board of India are organising the ‘Golden Leaf India Awards: Southern Tea Competition (TGLIA-2018)’, 14th edition this year, and this began with a tea evaluation test held at Coonoor.

Arun Kumar, convener, organising committee, TGLIA, said that response to its 14th edition was overwhelming. As many as 156 entries were received from 50 estates/companies for this year's competition compared to 123 entries last year.

The first level screening of teas for the competition was held at UPASI, Coonoor. A five-member panel representing leading brokers and major tea packers evaluated the teas that entered the competition.

The process of selecting the best tea from various agro-climatic regions is based on a multi-layer screening process using a scoring system that captures the various quality attributes of tea such as dry leaf appearance, infused or spent leaf appearance, liquor attributes such as colour, aroma, briskness and strength.
