Speeding car kills pregnant mom, boy near Salem
Salem: A 29-year-old pregnant woman and a school boy were tragically killed when a speeding car that ran amok on the Nagavalli-Taramangalam road hit them on Monday night near Periyasoragai village in Salem district.
Police said on Monday that Manimekalai, in her eighth month of pregnancy, had been walking with a pot to fill water from a roadside pump when the driver of the car lost control, knocked her down and crashed into a tea stall nearby where a tenth class student, Kamalraj, 15, had been sipping tea, seriously injuring him too.
Both the critically injured woman and the schoolboy were rushed to the nearby government hospital by passersby, but they unfortunately died on way. Three persons travelling by the car tried to flee the spot, but members of the public caught them and gave them a thrashing. Nangavalli police on information rushed to the spot, rescued the three persons and took them for interrogation.
