Central institutions win top slot
Chennai: The India rankings show that the central government funded institutions are head and shoulders above the state government funded and privately funded institutions in the country.
For example, in engineering and management, all the top 10 institutions are the IIT’s and IIM’s. Department of management studies in IIT Kanpur and Indian Institute of Forest Management in Bhopal found the place in top 10.
The universities list also is dominated by the central universities with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as ranked the top university in the country.
Only in the pharmacy sector alone dominated by the private institutions. Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences named as the top institute in the country.
“The Central government is giving a lot of funds to IIT and IIM’s. So, It’s natural to expect them to indulge in quality research and teaching,” said H.Devaraj, vice-chairman, University Grants Commission.
“There are good institutions in both private and central government. But for the private institutions it will take some time to become the research institutions as IIT’,” said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT Madras. “The government funding is more in the central government institutions than what the privately funded institutions. Private institutions should realize on what basis they want to be evaluated either teaching or research or both teaching and research,” he said.
Two universities in Tamil Nadu found the place in top 25 universities as Bharathiar University and Amrita Vishwa Vithyapeetham both in Coimbatore secured 14th and 19th ranks respectively.
