Hyderabad: TRS helmet drive thrown to wind
Hyderabad: Despite MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha's 'Gift a helmet' campaign to raise awareness among the two-wheeler riders in the state, the TRS party cadre in the state were seen taking bike rallies in the city without helmets.
The rally was taken out to Kongara Kalan for a public meeting organized by ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi and none of the party workers were not- wearing a helmet while riding a bike during the rally. Experts alleged that if the political leaders do not follow the rules and regulations, what's the point in giving advices to the public; it is just a publicity stunt.
According to WHO, wearing helmet decreases the risk and severity of injuries by about 72 per cent and the likelihood of death by up to 39 per cent. Road safety experts stated In India, 28 motorcyclists died every day in 2016 because of their failure to wear helmets and Wearing helmets: Helps avoid 69 percent of injuries to riders.
Mr Vinod Kumar Kanumala a road safety expert said, ‘’the government at one hand promotes the use of helmets and at other hand by there own MLA’s, MP’s and other cadets disowned the law and there own safety. MP K Kavita started the campaign of giving a helmet to all the brothers on Raksha Bandhan for all the sisters other side Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao says to come for the meeting by tractors and this campaign as been taken by rest of the country. IT minister K T Rama Rao also is a member of minister’s sub-committee on Road safety in Telangana; party/government is responsible for the safety of all the people. What’s the point in giving advices to the public, when it’s only for publicity?’’.
He adds, ‘’Motorcycles often share traffic space with other fast moving heavier vehicles example trucks and buses. They are less visible and lack physical protection. Also motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die those drivers of passenger’s cars in an accident due to which safety gears avoid 69 percent of injuries to bike riders. Not wearing a helmet increases the risk of sustaining a head injury, severity of head injuries and likelihood of dying from a head injury.
Mr Anil Kumar Additional Traffic commissioner of Hyderabad Traffic police said they will get the video of the bike rallies and will take strict action against the bike riders without helmets.
