Kerala government to foot Hanan Hameed's medical bill

The government move comes after Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala told minister E.P. Jayarajan about her condition.

Kochi: The state government will foot the medical bill of Hanan Hameed, the fish vending girl, who was injured in a car accident at Kodungallur on Monday. She is currently undergoing treatment at the Medical Trust Hospital in Kochi.

Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said in a Facebook post that the government will take over the entire medical expenses of Hanan, who has undergone a spinal surgery. "The state government will bear the medical expenses of Hanan with the support of the Medical Trust Hospital. We have discussed with the hospital authorities the treatment being given to Hanan," the post said.

The government move comes after Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala told minister E.P. Jayarajan about her condition.

Mr. Chennithala said that Al-Azhar College, Thodupuzha, had paid an amount of Rs. 1 lakh to the hospital for her surgery on his direction. "I have asked minister Jayarajan to transfer enough funds for her treatment. I hope she will recover soon," he said.

According to hospital sources, Hanan will be in the ICU for a few more days. "A surgery that lasted for three hours was successful. The fractured vertebra has been fixed with permanent implant and she will regain mobility of her legs within a short period," hospital sources said.
