Lawyers protest sidelining of Karnataka High Court judge
THANJAVUR: Advocates boycotted courts in Thanjavur district on Wednesday protesting against what they alleged ‘insult and injustice’ done to Jayanth Patel, second Judge of Karnataka High court by the Collegium of the Supreme court for appointing Judges.
M.R.R.Sivasubramanian, secretary of the joint action council (JAC) of Bar Associations in Tamil Nadu and Puduchery told presspersons that 1,500 advocates in the district boycotted courts at Thanajvur, Kumbakonam,Papanasam, Thiruvaiyaru, Pattukottai and Orathanadu.
He said that THE Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court is due for retirement on October nine. Mr. Jayanth Patel, who is the second judge in the court, has to be promoted to this post and should take charge on October 10.But the Collegium, which appoints judges, has transferred and posted him as third judge of the Allahabad high court. Already, he was superseded by nine judges who are now occupying number one position at various High courts and as judges of Supreme court.In these circumstances Jayanth Patel has resigned his post.Sivasubramanian said that agitation will also be held in Delhi in November-end, as next part of the protest demanding that President, Ramnath Kovind should not accept the resignation of Jayanth Patel and that the Collegium should withdraw the transfer and pave way for Jayanth Patel becoming Chief Justice of Karnataka.
Advocates of Karnataka also boycotted courts on Wednesday, Mr. Sivasubramanian said. He also disclosed that the Bar Council of India has issued notice against Dushyanth Dave, former president of Bar Council of India, for expressing opinion against the decision of the Collegium and in support of Jayanth Patel. “We appeal to the Bar Council of India to withdraw the notice”, Mr. Sivasubramanian urged.
