Malampuzha dam shutters opened after heavy rainfall

The four shutters of Peechi dam in Thrissur were opened by one inch.

Thrissur/Palakkad: All the four shutters of the Malampuzha dam were opened by 30 cm at 3 pm on Thursday after the water level reached the maximum capacity and in view of the forecast of heavy rain in central Kerala from Friday.

Attappady and the high ranges of Nelliampathy, which witnessed several landslides during the deluge in August, have been placed on high alert.
However, the red alert declared in Thrissur and Palakkad has been withdrawn by the district administration as per the new update on the forecast given by the IMD.

The four shutters of Peechi dam in Thrissur were opened by one inch on Wednesday evening and the four shutters of Chimmini dam by 10 cm on Thursday afternoon.

Thrissur district collector T.V. Anupama on Thursday conducted an emergency meeting of the revenue and Disaster Management Authority officials of the district at the collectorate.

With more water expected to be released from Upper Sholayar dams and the Peringalkuthu dam, the water level in Chalakkudy river is expected to rise by more than one metre. Those on the banks of the river have been asked to maintain high alert, the collector said.

The education department has stopped the classes and events in schools in Thrissur on Saturday in view of the expected heavy winds and rain in the district from Friday.
