People block road after boy's death near Ariyalur

The boy and his parents were walking towards a bus stop to catch a bus for Jayankondam for Deepavali' festival purchase.

TIRUCHY: Vehicular traffic came to a grinding halt for about an hour in and around V.Kaikatti area near Ariyalur on Sunday, when a section of villagers of Kattupriongiyam resorted to a road blockade in protest against a motor vehicle accident in which a four-year-old boy was killed.

Police said, the boy and his parents were walking towards a bus stop to catch a bus for Jayankondam for ‘Deepavali’ festival purchase.

One of their relatives, an aunt, waiting on the other side of the road called the boy Parthiban to come over to the other side. But tragically, as the boy was crossing the road, he was fatally run over by a magnesium-laden lorry.

Protesting against this, the villagers and relatives of the deceased resorted to a ‘road roko’, demanding a total ban on operation of heavily-loaded trucks through that area by some private cement factories.

Police rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitators to disperse peacefully with an assurance that they would take up the issue with the higher officials for suitable remedy.

The police also removed the body of the boy to the Government hospital at Ariyalur for post-mortem. The ground situtaion was tense until cops helped to cool tempers.
