Nellore: Police serves snacks to waiting petitioners
Nellore: Contrary to general opinion over the rude and inconsiderate behaviour of police, police officers of Nellore have been providing food and snacks to petitioners if they are waiting beyond 6 pm in the evening for their turn during grievance day which is scheduled for every Monday at the district police office.
The influx of petitioners is so high that SP P.H.D. Ramakrishna is forced to sit up to 1 am or 2 am in the office on Monday’s since the petitioners are particular about pouring their woes before him.
The mouth publicity about SP giving a patient hearing to the complaints and expediting the action against accused has led to sudden spurt in the number of people coming to the grievance cell ever since he took charge. Unable to handle the crowds, officials have decided to hold the grievance day on Thursday’s also from last two weeks.
Most of the petitioners knock the doors of SP’s office after their efforts to seek justice at police station level fails or if they are dissatisfied with the attitude of the officers at station level. Interestingly majority of the petitions are marriage disputes followed by cheating cases, investigation lapses, property offences, missing cases.
According to the Mr Ramakrishna, complainants in marriage disputes are mostly unhappy with the officers dealing with the case and the issues are settled after changing the officer or by transferring the case to women police stations. Counselling plays an important role in finding solutions to the differences between the couple, he added.
In case of cheating cases, police focus will be on recovering the money involved and registering cases against the culprits. With regard to investigation lapses, the SP will study the case diary and also obtain a report on the issue from special branch. Departmental action will be initiated against the investigation officer concerned if there is any lapse on his part.
Reacting to a question on growing number of property offences in the district, SP said there is a criminal element in most of the cases, except if the dispute is between family members, while pointing to creation of forged documents. He said the culprits are going scot free because police are usually averse to deal such cases as they appear like civil disputes.
He said they are keeping a close watch on some criminals involved in creating forged documents while assuring stern action against the offenders. He claimed that they are resolving 70 percent of the petitions on the spot and 95 percent of the cases over a period of time while responding to a question on large number of people bee lining to his office on Mondays.
