Rameswaram: Transgender cop attempts suicide, alleges harassment by superiors

Charging the three policemen with being responsible for her suicidal act, Nasriya demanded that they be brought to book.

Rameswaram: A trans woman police constable in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district has been admitted to hospital, after she tried to kill herself, unable to bear the verbal humiliation allegedly heaped by her senior colleagues, police sources said on Tuesday.

R. Nasriya, a transgender hailing from Paramakudi in this backward district had joined as constable in the Ramanathapuram Armed Constabulary wing a few months ago and had been staying in the police quarters there, sources said. However, on Monday night, Nasriya attempted suicide by consuming rat poison mixed with some liquid and fainted. A self-shot video, reportedly, of Nasriya's purported act of self-kill went viral later on social media network after she reportedly shared the clips on WhatsApp with some of her close friends.

Alleging harassment and verbal abuse at the workplace, Nasriya reportedly, has in that video clip named three of her superior officers - Inspector Muthuramalingam, special sub-inspector Jayaseelan, and chief writer, Parthiban - who allegedly used abusive words against her and commented on her behavior.

Charging the three policemen with being responsible for her suicidal act, Nasriya demanded that they be brought to book. Luckily, soon after she fainted, her colleagues in the neighbourhood rushed her to the Ramanathapuram government headquarters hospital where she is under intensive care treatment, sources said.

The Ramanathapuram district SP, Mr. Om Prakash Meena told some media reporters that he has ordered a departmental enquiry into the episode. Nonetheless, police circles here maintained that as Nasriya had suddenly gone on “leave” for the last three weeks without informing her superiors, “she was only advised to report for duty regularly and that they had said nothing bad about her character or behavior.” Further investigations are on.
